There are psychedelic explorers who like magic mushrooms and LSD, and then there are those who like to dive a little deeper. Ayahuasca calls to some, while iboga piques the curiosity and needs of others. Some folks are intrigued by the all-immersive 5-MeO-DMT experience and consider that to be the end of their journey, while others find their healing and medicine in the more commonly known DMT-N,N.
Still, others are pushed forward by curiosity and might find themselves more inclined to explore the more obscure psychedelic compounds out there, one of which remains relatively unknown: 5-MeO-MALT, a designer drug that, despite bearing a familiar name, offers a unique experience. Not much is known about the 5-MeO-MALT, and reports online are limited and purely firsthand anecdotes, with the exception of some well-reported videos from a few serious enthusiasts.
It’s thanks to these psychedelic explorers that we know more about 5-MeO-MALT and its effects. Cited as the “other God Molecule,” 5-MeO-MALT can be considered to be potentially even more powerful than 5-MeO-DMT. But what is it really? Are there risks involved? And how can I get my hands on it?
What is it?
5-MeO-MALT (5-methoxy-N-methyl-N-allyltryptamine) is a designer drug of the tryptamine class that is most closely related to the similarly named 5-MeO-DALT (you can see how this could get confusing), which is another tryptamine compound synthesized by drug pioneer and researcher Alexander Shulgin which we’ve discussed here.
It’s been a challenge to find real information about MALT, given that it’s branded as a “lesser known” psychedelic from the get-go and typically only regarded as a research chemical. However, reports do exist, with people consuming the substance and sharing their affinity for it, and it’s gained a small cult following in the left-of-mainstream psychedelic community among those focused on spiritual awakening, God awareness, ego death, becoming actualized, and more.
5-MeO-MALT is seemingly considered to be even more powerful and intense than 5-MeO-DMT, often hailed as the most powerful psychedelic in the world, though the two are somewhat structurally similar. Its freebase is often in the form of a brown wax or powder, sometimes arriving in an “entirely liquid” form, though it can be more whitish the purer it is.
How is it taken?
5-MeO-MALT can be smoked in a pipe, snorted (although this causes a painful burning sensation), taken orally (typically not the best way as it tends to require more product), or vaped.
The few trip reports that exist online suggest that 1.5 mg is the threshold dose of sensation, with real experiences beginning at or after 10 mg consumed. According to TripSit, a low dose for oral consumption is 15-25 mg, a high dose begins at 25 mg and goes up to 50 mg, with no reports existing of anyone taking more than 50 mg. For those looking to snort the substance, a light dose is listed as 5-10 mg, with most people aiming for anywhere between 10 to 20 mg (trip reports online hover between 10 and 18 mg), and a strong dose going over 20 mg. For smokers and vapers, similar numbers apply, with a strong dose beginning at 15 mg instead of 20.
What does it feel like?
To describe what MALT feels like, let’s talk about its closest and slightly better-known cousin, 5-MeO-DMT. 5-MeO-DMT is generally described as “ineffable,” as an all-immersive, not entirely visual experience in which you lose your sense of self and experience non-duality, infinity, ego death, God realization, etc, whatever you want to call it. However, unlike other psychedelics, 5-MeO-DMT is fairly non-visual — it doesn’t give you those trippy hallucinations like its trippier (and more popular) relative, DMT-N,N does.
Similarly, 5-MeO-MALT offers the same intense and fast-acting self-dissolution. It comes at you fast and hard, even in what seems to be a small dose. It doesn’t give a lot of visuals, though some people report some swirly moves here and there, but not enough to completely take over and offer an all-immersive visual experience. People have reported seeing light swirls, fractals, and geometric patterns, but like 5-MeO-DMT, it gives more of a sense of “nothingness” and eventually, everything appears to sort of blend together with the visuals losing importance and the sensations taking priority in the trip. Auditory hallucinations are common, with users reporting sounds and strong vibrations that they “feel” in their core and more.
MALT has been called the “other God Molecule,” with users who have had positive trips reporting a sensation of pure consciousness, ego dissolution, an understanding of God, becoming a white light, losing body and spatial awareness, and more. The experience has been, oftentimes, described as “beautiful,” with users simply existing, slowing down, and feeling like life was simple. One Reddit user claims it was “the most overwhelming thing [they’ve] ever experienced by many orders of magnitude.”
According to a handful of brave psychedelic explorers, MALT can:
Eliminate pain
Act as an aphrodisiac (this has been noted more than once)
Make you drool
Make you vomit or make you very nauseous
Give you ego dissolution
5-MeO-MALT comes on quickly and lasts longer than the typical 5-MeO-DMT experience. Users will notice that instead of the rapid snap back to reality after 5-MeO-DMT and DMT-N,N, MALT seems to lull you back to reality and offer a more gentle come down that can last several hours. Onset can last anywhere from one to 30 minutes, depending on the method of consumption (usually very quickly after smoking or snorting) and getting back to baseline after consuming can take to four hours, which is notably much longer than 5-MeO-DMT, though most people seem to be fully functional before then, reporting being able to eat, sleep, and even focus on writing and work afterwards.
This guy shared a live footage trip report that had his body making a lot of symmetrical movements, which is interesting, but watches of his other videos show he does this on other substances as well and seems to have “trained” himself in a way to do this.
How do you get it and how much does it cost?
Like other designer drugs and research chemicals, 5-MeO-MALT can be purchased online as a research chemical in salt form marked as “not for human consumption” on various websites for around $50 USD for 100 mg.
Is it legal?
5-MeO-MALT is illegal in Hungary, and Sweden suggested marking it as a hazardous substance in 2019, although it appears to not have happened. Apparently, it is legal in Canada.
Bad trips
Despite the generally favourable reviews of 5-MeO-MALT online, it’s important to note that bad trips are very possible and do happen, especially with a substance this powerful. Though no deaths have been reported from 5-MeO-MALT consumption as far as we can tell, it’s important to remember that risks are always there. With psychedelics and compounds as intense and short-lasting as those in the 5-MeO series, it’s most common that a bad trip just has to be ridden out. In the face of total ego death, it’s normal to experience a form of terror. This terror will eventually end. While you cannot stop a bad trip, you can try to decrease the likeliness of it happening by going into the psychedelic experience with the knowledge that it could happen, a loose plan, and a positive mindset. If anxiety and worry were present before, they will only be heightened during the experience, increasing the possibility of a negative trip.
Harm reduction
If you’re planning on experimenting with 5-MeO-DALT or any psychedelics, especially research chemicals, make sure you do your due diligence to ensure an experience that’s as safe as possible.
Don’t mix drugs
Experiment and do an allergy and reaction test with a small dose first
Do a lot of research so you know what dose you want to try and have an idea of what you’re getting yourself into
Consider having a trip sitter around you for your first time or let someone know what you’re doing
Make sure you’re in the right mindset and environmental setting
Test your substances to make sure the synthesis is pure and contains no potentially toxic or harmful additives
Only go for these obscure tryptamines if you already have a lot of prior psychedelic experience. These are not recreational drugs, and have very serious mental and spiritual effects. For something like MALT, it may be preferrable to have experienced a similar compound like 5-MeO-DMT before experimenting with it
Know your dose and measure responsibly.
